Taller de Historia de la Ciencia y los Saberes en América Latina y el Caribe para estudiantes avanzados de posgrado
The Red de Ciencias y Saberes en Latinoamérica y el Caribe (RECSLAC) invites advanced graduate students to apply for a five-day workshop to take place at the University of Maryland, College Park in Summer 2024. RECSLAC will fund airfare, lodging, and meals for 10 participants, 5 from Latin America and the Caribbean and 5 from the United States who are working on Latin American or Caribbean topics related to science and knowledge—broadly understood to encompass the natural, physical, and social sciences and (his)stories of medicine, environment, technology, and engineering as well as popular narratives on the natural worlds.
Workshop sessions will be devoted to discussing participants’ dissertation chapters and articles and will also include relevant readings related to student research interests. The workshop will be led by three eminent scholars working in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States.
Our aim is to create more robust conversations among students working the United States and in Latin America and the Caribbean. We also seek to deepen understanding of how the Latin American and Caribbean histories can and have intersected with Science and Technology Studies and the History of Science. Students working on Latin America or the Caribbean the opportunity to develop a more robust understanding of topics and themes in the History of Science and STS. Students trained in STS and History of Science programs will gain a deeper understanding of their work may contribute to broader discussions among historians of the region.
Those interested in participating should send 1) a current CV; 2) an abstract (maximum 300 words) of a chapter or paper they would like to present, and 3) a list of 5-10 readings related to their topics that they have found inspirational.
